Registration deadlines

The Jägerprüfung takes place twice a year:

Important: Registration must be in writing. Late registrations will not be considered.

Exam components

The Jägerprüfung consists of three parts, all of which must be passed:

1. Written exam

• Duration: approx. 3 hours
• Format: Multiple-choice and open questions
• Subjects:
  • Wildlife biology and wildlife diseases
  • Hunting operations and prevention of damage by game
  • Weapons law and weapons knowledge
  • Hunting law
  • Nature conservation and landscape management

2. Shooting test

• Rifle: 5 shots at the running boar (100m)
• Shotgun: Clay pigeon shooting (15 W clays)
• Handgun: Optional, depending on the examination regulations

Pass mark: At least 50% hits in each discipline

3. Oral and practical exam

• Duration: approx. 30-45 minutes per candidate
• Location: In the hunting ground (practical demonstration)
• Contents:
  • Identifying game
  • Weapon handling
  • Hunting dogs
  • Dressing and handling game
  • Knowledge of the hunting ground

Berlin special feature: No compulsory training

Unlike in most federal states, in Berlin no hunting training is required by law. You can prepare through self-study and register directly for the exam.

• No fixed course times

Recommendation

Despite the lack of an obligation, we recommend a preparation course, especially for the practical parts (shooting, game handling).

Course costs: approx. 1.500-3.000 EUR (incl. shooting range fees)

Failure rate and resit

• Failure rate: approx. 20-30%
• Resit: Parts that were not passed can be retaken
• Waiting period: At least 4 W weeks until the resit
• Resit costs: approx. 50-100 EUR per part

2. Practise shooting regularly - The shooting test is often the most difficult part
