No-stopping zone Berlin moving house: application, deadlines and costs
When it makes sense, scheduling, saving costs.
No-stopping zone Berlin moving house: For a move, you apply for the temporary no-stopping zone from the road traffic authority of the responsible borough. The official Berlin Service Portal page mentions an informal application, a minimum fee of 21 EUR and an average processing time of approx. 4 W weeks. The authority issues the order but does not provide any traffic signs.
When it makes sense
You need a no-stopping zone for your move if there are no free parking spaces in front of your house. The road traffic authority only approves no-stopping zones where there is a concrete need for moving day.
A no-stopping zone is worth it in these situations:
- Removal van cannot park directly outside the door
- Street is normally completely full of parked cars
- Move takes place at the weekend or on a bank holiday
- You are moving to a high-traffic area
- Several trips with the van are necessary
Without a no-parking zone, you risk delays and additional costs. The removal van may have to park far away. That means longer walking distances and more working time for the removal helpers.
The alternative is moving very early in the morning. Then there are often still parking spaces free. But this does not work reliably in all Berlin Kieze.
Tip: Apply for the no-parking zone for both addresses, old and new flat. That way, space for the van is more likely to be planned at both places.
RECOMMENDED PROVIDERS
Application
You apply for a no-parking zone at the Straßenverkehrsbehörde of your district. The minimum fee is 21 EUR. Processing takes an average of 4 Weeks.
The official Berlin service Haltverbot für Umzüge names an informal application as the required document. Submit the application to the Straßenverkehrsbehörde of the district where the no-parking zone is to be put up.
For the application, you should prepare the following information:
- old or new address where the removal lorry is to stop
- desired date and time
- length of the loading zone required
- reason "move"
- contact details for queries
Check with the responsible district whether the application is accepted by email, PDF, or via a digital form process. Berlin does not mention any issuing of signs by the authority for this service.
Note: Hiring and putting up signs additionally costs between 50 EUR and 150 EUR. These costs are added to the official fee. You must hire the signs from a Baustellenabsicherung-Firma. You can find everything about putting up the signs in the Schilder-Ratgeber.
Scheduling and deadlines
Processing time varies by district between 3 and 10 Weeks. In Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, private applications take up to 10 Weeks. You can find more details in our district comparison.
- Submit the application at least 6 Weeks before moving day
- Signs must be put up 72 hours before they become valid, allow 4 Tage
Legal basis: Approval is granted under § 45 (6) StVO. The authority puts up traffic signs 283/286.
Save on costs
The biggest cost trap with a no-parking zone for moving is poor scheduling. If you apply too late, the move becomes expensive.
Typical cost traps:
- Applying too late: Move has to be postponed, removal company charges cancellation fees
- Incorrect sign installation: Office rejects it, a new application again costs at least 21 EUR
- Signs ordered too late: Baustellenabsicherung companies need lead time, express costs extra
- Incomplete traffic sign plan: Office requests corrections, processing starts again
Is a service provider worth it? Many people who are moving have the no-parking zone applied for by a company. It costs more, but saves stress during the already chaotic move planning. Company applications are generally processed faster than private applications.
A service provider for the no-parking zone costs between 80 EUR and 200 EUR in total. They take care of the application, traffic sign plan, ordering the signs and putting them up. You have no organisational effort.
Money-saving tip: Apply for the no-parking zone only for moving day and the hours you really need. Every additional day can increase the fee. For a normal move, 6 to 8 hours are enough.
You can find more details on all costs in the Kosten-Ratgeber. Back to the Halteverbot-Übersicht.
