No-parking zone for a move in Munich

Updated:

When it makes sense, scheduling and checklist for moving day.

A no-parking zone makes your move in Munich significantly easier. You have free parking spaces right outside the door and save time on moving day.

The Mobilitätsreferat is the central point of contact for all applications. Apply 3 to 4 W weeks before the moving date. Please note that a maximum of 3 Tage are approved for moves.

When a no-parking zone makes sense

A temporary no-parking zone is especially worthwhile in these situations:

  • Narrow streets without sufficient parking spaces
  • City-centre location with high demand for parking
  • Large move with lots of furniture and multiple trips
  • Removal van needs space right outside the house

Advantages of a no-parking zone:

  • Reserved parking spaces on moving day
  • Shorter distances between the flat and the removal van
  • Less stress and a quicker process

When you may be able to do without a no-parking zone:

  • Quiet residential street with plenty of free parking spaces
  • Own parking space or driveway available
  • Small move with little to transport

Tip: Apply for the no-parking zone for both addresses, the old and the new flat. That way, there is more likely to be space reserved for the van in both places.

Scheduling

The right scheduling is crucial for a successful move with a no-parking zone.

Timeline:

Note: If you need the no-parking zone for longer than 3 calendar days, you must apply by post, fax or email. The online application is then not possible.

Checklist for your move

Follow this checklist for a smooth process:

3 to 4 W weeks before the move:

  • Set a date for the move (date and times)
  • Calculate the required length of the zone (in metres)
  • Download the application form from the Mobilitätsreferat
  • Fill in the form and enclose a sketch of the planned no-parking zone
  • Submit the application (online recommended)

After receiving approval:

  • Reserve signs from a roadworks safety company
  • Plan the installation date (4 Tage before the move)

4 Tage before the move:

  • Put up signs (by no later than 23:59)
  • Take photos for the installation record
  • Prepare a prior-notification list (all vehicles already parked)
  • Keep the notice and record handy

On moving day:

  • Check that the zone is kept clear
  • If someone is parked illegally: contact the police
  • Carry out the move

After the move:

  • Remove signs immediately or turn them away from the road
  • Return signs to the hire service

Illegal parking on moving day

What to do if, despite the no-parking zone, a vehicle is in your zone?

Procedure for illegally parked vehicles:

  1. Check whether the vehicle is on your prior-notification list
  2. If yes: The vehicle was there before the no-parking zone, towing is difficult
  3. If no: contact the police or Ordnungsamt
  4. Keep the notice and installation record ready as proof

Important: Without an installation record and a prior-notification list, you cannot prove when the vehicle was parked. That is why documentation is so important.

Do it yourself or use a service provider

Own application:

  • You submit the application yourself to the Mobilitätsreferat
  • You organise the signs yourself
  • You put up the signs yourself and take them down again

Advantage: Potentially cheaper
Disadvantage: Time required, liability risk if incorrectly installed

Service provider:

  • Takes care of the entire process
  • From application and signs through to installation

Advantage: No effort, no liability
Disadvantage: Higher costs

On liability: If you put up the signs incorrectly or incompletely yourself, you may be held liable if problems occur (e.g. disruption to traffic). Service providers take on this responsibility.
