Written examination
Multiple-choice test with 25 questions each from the subject areas of wildlife biology, hunting operations, weapons, law and game meat hygiene; the questions come from a statewide standardised question catalogue of 500 questions (published at https://www.mlv.nrw.de/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/jaegerpruefungsfragen.pdf). The written part takes place across the state on the same day in the last full week of April.
Requirement to pass: The DVO LJG-NRW provides for a resit in a part that has not been passed; a resit may be taken at the earliest three months after the failure has been determined.
Shooting test
Rifle shooting: 5 shots seated with the rifle supported at the roebuck target from 90–110 m, as well as 5 shots standing unsupported at a moving yearling wild boar target from 48–62 m. Shotgun shooting: 10 moving targets (clay pigeons skeet or trap or kipphase) from a hunting gun stance; double shots are permitted.
After hearing the Landesvereinigung der Jäger, the higher hunting authority may permit deviations in the choice of disciplines (e.g. between skeet, trap, kipphase).
Registering for the examination
- Registration deadline: The application for admission to the Jägerprüfung must be submitted to the Untere Jagdbehörde at least two months before the date of the written part.

- Examination fee: 220 EUR to 300 EUR
