Examination components

  1. Shooting test (rifle shooting, shotgun shooting, handgun)
  2. Written examination (120 multiple-choice questions from 6 subjects)
  3. Oral and practical examination (in the hunting district, up to 30 minutes per subject)

Written examination

State-wide uniform date (traditionally 2. Wednesday in May), approx. 6 hours’ duration; 120 multiple-choice questions from 6 subjects (20 questions each). The question catalogue is public and can be downloaded from https://ljv-rlp.de/ausbildung-und-beratung/pruefungsfragen/

Pass requirement: A resit in one subject is possible once; if you fail definitively, the entire examination is failed.

Shooting test

The shooting test is taken before the written examination and comprises three disciplines: rifle shooting (10 shots, minimum score 60 points), shotgun shooting (10 running hares/clay pigeons/falling hares, minimum score 4–8 hits depending on the variant) and handgun/pistol (5–6 shots at a scoring target at 7 m, minimum score 4–5 hits).

A part that is not passed may be repeated once; if you fail definitively, the entire examination is failed. The candidate may use their own weapons and ammunition or those provided.

Registering for the examination

  • Registration deadline: According to the service portal, there is no state-wide deadline. Individual district administrations may set their own submission deadlines for specific examination dates (example: no later than 3 W weeks before the examination date). Admission is applied for in writing or online to the competent lower hunting authority. Direct registration is not possible; examination participants must be reported by a hunting school registered with and recognised by the LJV.
  • Registration with: Lower hunting authority at your place of residence or at the place where you completed your hunting training (Kreisverwaltung / administration of the independent city).   • Examination fee: 258 EUR
