Sign 283 bans every stop, sign 286 does not

Updated:

Sign 283 is the absolute no-stopping sign: Stopping on the carriageway is prohibited. Sign 286 is the restricted no-stopping sign: You stop for at most three minutes. Exceptions are getting in or out and loading or unloading.

Sign 283 absolute no-stopping

The official obligation or prohibition at sign 283 is: Stopping on the carriageway is prohibited. Under section 41 subsection 1 you follow regulatory signs in Annex 2. At the absolute no-stopping sign you do not stop on the carriageway.

Sign 286 restricted no-stopping

Anyone who drives a vehicle may not stop on the carriageway at sign 286 for longer than three minutes. Exceptions are getting in or out or loading or unloading. Loading must be carried out without delay.

What stopping means in the VwV-StVO

Stopping is, under the VwV-StVO on section 12 subsection 1, a deliberate interruption of a journey. It is not caused by the traffic situation or by an order. At a traffic light or in a jam you therefore do not stop in that sense.

Under section 12 subsection 2 you park when you leave the vehicle or stop for longer than three minutes. The three minutes at sign 286 are the rule of that sign.

Where signs 283 and 286 apply

The bans apply only on the side of the road with the sign and up to the next junction or intersection. They also end at another sign for stationary traffic. A temporary sign 283 or 286 overrides other parking signs.
