2026 EV grant for pensioners: no separate scheme, same BAFA rules

Updated:

Short answer: There is no pensioner-specific federal EV premium in 2026. Neither BAFA nor BMUKN runs an extra “EV for retirees” programme with its own amounts. People in retirement apply for the general 2026 E-Auto-Förderung under the same rules as other private individuals.

The former Umweltbonus ended at the close of 17 December 2023. New applications have been closed since 18 December 2023. Today’s scheme is the guideline of 19 May 2026 (BAnz AT 19.06.2026 B3), administered by BAFA, applied for via Förderzentrale Deutschland.

BAFA FAQ 2.5: Yes, pensioners can apply. If there is no duty to file a tax return and no assessments exist, the return can be filed retrospectively.

No pension certificate instead of a tax assessment

BAFA requires two current, consecutive income-tax assessments for everyone who contributes to household taxable income. The assessed tax years may be at most three years before the application. Without those assessments, BAFA says you cannot apply.

What BAFA needs from the assessment:

  • addressee
  • tax ID
  • date and tax year
  • amount of taxable annual income (zu versteuerndes Einkommen)

A pension statement does not replace that proof on the BAFA pages checked. Anyone not required to file can still file voluntarily. The tax office then normally issues a formal assessment (AO § 155(1)). If there is no taxable income, the assessment shows EUR 0 – BAFA accepts that as proof of the income cap.

Moving into retirement after the two assessment years does not change a grant already awarded. What counts is the average of the two latest assessments at the time of application (BAFA FAQ 3.5).

Who is eligible (same rules)

  • private individual with main residence in Germany
  • vehicle first registered in Germany in the applicant’s name from 1 January 2026
  • class M1, assigned to private assets (not business assets)
  • taxable household income at most EUR 80,000; plus EUR 5,000 per child under 18, at most two children, so EUR 90,000 maximum
  • apply after registration, at latest 12 months later
  • keep the vehicle registered in Germany for 36 months
  • one funded vehicle per applicant; at most two applications per household

Not eligible: used cars, day registrations, factory registrations, demonstrators, companies/associations/municipalities, vehicles in business assets.

Grant amount – no pensioner band

The amount depends only on drivetrain, taxable household income and relevant children. BAFA and BMUKN do not publish an age or pension band.

Building blocks on those pages:

  • base EUR 3,000 for battery-electric and fuel-cell cars; EUR 1,500 for eligible plug-in hybrids and range extenders
  • plus EUR 500 per child, at most two children
  • plus EUR 1,000 if taxable income is under EUR 60,000; plus another EUR 1,000 if under EUR 45,000

That yields, on BAFA/BMUKN figures, EUR 3,000–6,000 for BEV/FCEV and EUR 1,500–4,500 for eligible PHEV/REEV. Förderzentrale also states a maximum of EUR 6,000.

PHEV and range extenders must emit at most 60 g CO₂/km or have at least 80 km inner-city electric range (EAER-City) and must be first registered by 30 June 2027.

Application path for pensioners

  1. Check whether two income-tax assessments for the last three tax years exist. If not: file now with the tax office – processing takes time.
  2. Set up BundID with the online ID card (high assurance) or an ELSTER certificate (substantial). Username and password alone are not enough.
  3. Buy or lease a new vehicle and register it in Germany in your name. The registration date counts, not the order date.
  4. Apply only via Förderzentrale Deutschland. BAFA pays the keeper’s account.
  5. Another person or a dealer may be authorised; upload the power of attorney. Payment still goes to the keeper.

What this tip expressly denies

  • There is no 2026 federal scheme titled or designed as a “pensioner premium”.
  • There are no separate pensioner amounts beside the social tiers.
  • The closed Umweltbonus does not accept new applications.
  • Check the federal funding database for your place of residence.

Internal placement
