Introduction
You have purchased a balcony power plant (Balkonkraftwerk) and want to start using it. But first, you need to register it. Since 2024, the registration process has become much simpler – a single registration in the Marktstammdatenregister (Market Master Data Register) is all you need. Here is how it works, step by step.
Where Do I Need to Register My Balcony Power Plant?
Marktstammdatenregister (MaStR)
The only mandatory registration for balcony power plants is the Marktstammdatenregister (Market Master Data Register) operated by the Bundesnetzagentur (Federal Network Agency).
- Website: marktstammdatenregister.de
- Cost: Free
- Duration: 15–30 minutes
- Deadline: Within one month of commissioning
Grid Operator Notification (no longer required since 2024)
Since the Solarpaket I (Solar Package I, May 2024), a separate notification to the grid operator is no longer necessary. The Bundesnetzagentur forwards the data automatically.
Before (until 2024): Two registrations required (MaStR + grid operator) Now (from 2024): Only MaStRStep-by-Step: Registration in the Marktstammdatenregister
Step 1: Create an Account
- Go to marktstammdatenregister.de
- Click on "Registrierung" (Registration)
- Enter your email address and a password
- Confirm the email
Step 2: Enter Operator Data
- Name and address of the system operator (you)
- Date of birth
- Contact details (email, phone)
Step 3: Register the System
- Type of system: Solar system
- Category: Plug-in solar device (balcony power plant)
- Power output: Inverter power in watts (e.g., 800 W)
- Module power: Total power of solar modules in watt peak (e.g., 1,600 Wp)
- Location: Address of the installation
- Commissioning date: When you first plugged in the system
Step 4: Confirmation
After registration, you will receive a MaStR number. Keep this safe – it serves as proof of your proper registration.
What Data Do You Need?
| Information | Where to Find It |
|---|---|
| Inverter power (W) | Data sheet or nameplate of the inverter |
| Module power (Wp) | Data sheet of the solar modules |
| Commissioning date | Date you first plugged it in |
| Location | Your address |
| Meter number | Electricity meter in the utility room |
Do I Need to Inform My Landlord?
Since the Solarpaket I (Solar Package I, 2024), a balcony power plant is classified as a privileged structural modification. This means:
- The landlord cannot refuse the installation without justification
- You must inform the landlord beforehand (notification obligation)
- A written request is recommended (email is sufficient)
- The landlord can only refuse for objective reasons (e.g., structural integrity, listed building protection)
For Condominiums (WEG – Homeowners' Association)
- Here too: privileged measure since 2024
- The homeowners' association must be informed
- A resolution by the WEG is generally not required
- Exception: for structural interventions affecting common property
Meter Replacement: What Applies in 2026?
Old Ferraris Meter (spinning disc)
If you still have an old meter, it is allowed to run backward. The grid operator will replace it free of charge with a modern bidirectional meter – but only when they get around to it.
You do not need to wait for the replacement. You may operate the system immediately.Modern Meter
- Bidirectional meter: Measures consumption and feed-in separately – ideal
- Smart meter: Being installed gradually, compatible
Deadlines and Consequences
| Topic | Deadline / Rule |
|---|---|
| MaStR registration | Within 1 month of commissioning |
| Grid operator notification | No longer required since 2024 |
| Landlord notification | Before installation |
| Non-registration | Administrative offense, fine up to 50,000 EUR (theoretically) |
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to register my balcony power plant with the tax office?
No. Since 2023, balcony power plants up to 30 kWp are exempt from income tax. A business registration is not required. The VAT on the purchase has also been 0% since 2023.What if I am already operating my balcony power plant but have not registered it yet?
Register immediately. Go to marktstammdatenregister.de and register the system. You can enter the commissioning date retroactively.Do I need an electrician for the registration?
No. Registration in the MaStR is a purely online process. For the installation itself, you also do not need an electrician when using a Schuko plug (standard household outlet). For a Wieland outlet, a qualified electrician is recommended. Can I register multiple balcony power plants?
Yes. Each system is registered separately in the MaStR. However, there is a limit of 800 W inverter power per residential unit for the simplified registration.Summary
- Only obligation: Marktstammdatenregister (free, online)
- Grid operator: No longer required since 2024 (automatic forwarding)
- Deadline: 1 month after commissioning
