Examination Authority

The Public Order Office Bremen, Section 11 (Firearms and Hunting Affairs) is responsible for the Hunter's Examination.

Registration

  • Deadline: By 31 December before the examination year
  • Format: In writing using the official form (section 3 para. 2 JuFPruefV -- Bremen Regulation on the Hunter's and Falconry Examination)
  • Minimum age: 15 years (no later than 6 months before the examination)
  • Residence: Primary residence in the area of the hunting authority (Bremen or Bremerhaven)
  • Documents: Passport photo, police clearance certificate, proof of training

The examination takes place at least once a year.

Examination Parts

The Hunter's Examination in Bremen consists of four parts. All must be passed.

1. Hunting Shooting Test

  • Rifle shooting (e.g. running boar at 50m)
  • Shotgun shooting at clay pigeons
  • Minimum hit counts must be achieved

2. Written Examination

  • Duration: 3.5 hours (210 minutes)
  • Scope: 140 questions (20 per subject area)
  • Format: Multiple-choice and open-ended questions

3. Practical Examination

  • Location: In a hunting district
  • Scope: 20 questions per subject area, 30 in the firearms subject area
  • Content: Conduct during the hunt, firearms handling, conduct after the shot

4. Oral Examination

  • Duration: Approx. 10 minutes per subject area
  • Scope: 10 questions per subject area, 30 in the firearms subject area
  • Conducted: Before the examination board

Subject Areas

The examination covers seven subject areas (as defined in the JuFPruefV, the Bremen Regulation on the Hunter's and Falconry Examination, and the joint examination regulations for Lower Saxony/Bremen):

  1. Wildlife biology and animal species -- Furred game and feathered game, wildlife diseases, wildlife management
  2. Hunting firearms and ammunition (30 instead of 20 questions) -- Rifles, shotguns, combination firearms, optics, ballistics, safe handling
  3. Hunting operations and game management -- Hunting methods, district organisation, hunting procedures, conduct during driven and individual hunts, conduct after the shot
  4. Agriculture and forestry, wildlife damage prevention -- Habitats, biotope management, wildlife damage prevention
  5. Nature conservation and landscape management law -- Hunting law (Federal Hunting Act / BJagdG, state hunting law, closed seasons, culling plans)
  6. Animal welfare law, hunting and firearms law -- Firearms Act, proof law, safe storage, conduct at the shooting range
  7. Game hygiene and meat inspection -- Use of hunting dogs, field dressing, handling, hygiene regulations, food law fundamentals

Grading and Passing

  • All four examination parts (shooting, written, practical, oral) are graded
  • Individual grades are combined into overall grades per subject area and examination part
  • Failure in essential parts or serious safety-related errors (particularly in firearms handling) lead to exclusion from the remaining examination or failure of the entire examination

Falconry Examination

A separate falconry examination or restricted Hunter's Examination is required for the falconry hunting license. The examination covers the subject areas relevant to hawking. Young people can also take the falconry examination and obtain a youth falconry hunting license.
