A no-stopping zone makes your move in Munich considerably easier. You get free parking spaces right at your door and save time on moving day.
The Mobility Department (Mobilitaetsreferat) is the central point of contact for all applications. Apply 3 to 4 weeks before the moving date. Note that a maximum of 3 days is approved for moves.
When a No-Stopping Zone Makes Sense
A temporary no-stopping zone is particularly worthwhile in these situations:
- Narrow streets without sufficient parking spaces
- City centre location with high parking pressure
- Large move with a lot of furniture and multiple trips
- Moving truck needs space directly in front of the building
Advantages of a no-stopping zone:
- Guaranteed parking spaces on moving day
- Shorter distances between the flat and the moving truck
- Less stress and a faster process
When you may be able to do without a no-stopping zone:
- Quiet residential street with plenty of free parking spaces
- Own parking space or driveway available
- Small move with little cargo
Tip: Apply for the no-stopping zone at both addresses -- old and new flat. This way you have a guaranteed parking space for the transporter at both locations.
Time Planning
Proper time planning is crucial for a successful move with a no-stopping zone.
Timeline:

Note: If you need the no-stopping zone for longer than 3 calendar days, you must apply by post, fax, or email. The online application is not available in that case.
Checklist for Your Move
Follow this checklist for a smooth process:
3 to 4 weeks before the move:
- Set the moving date (date and times)
- Calculate the required zone length (in metres)
- Download the application form from the Mobility Department (Mobilitaetsreferat)
- Complete the form and attach a sketch of the planned no-stopping zone
- Submit the application (online recommended)
After receiving the permit:
- Reserve signs from a construction site safety company
- Plan the installation date (4 days before the move)
4 days before the move:
- Install signs (by 23:59 at the latest)
- Take photos for the installation protocol
- Create the pre-notation list (all vehicles already parked)
- Keep permit and protocol readily accessible
On moving day:
- Check that the zone is clear
- In case of illegally parked cars: contact the police
- Carry out the move
After the move:
- Remove signs promptly or turn them away from the street
- Return signs to the rental company
Illegally Parked Cars on Moving Day
What to do if a vehicle is parked in your zone despite the no-stopping zone?
Procedure for illegally parked cars:
- Check whether the vehicle is on your pre-notation list
- If yes: the vehicle was there before the no-stopping zone; towing is difficult
- If no: contact the police or Public Order Office (Ordnungsamt)
- Have your permit and installation protocol ready as proof
Important: Without an installation protocol and pre-notation list, you cannot prove when the vehicle was parked. That is why documentation is so important.
Do It Yourself or Hire a Service Provider
Self-application:
- You submit the application yourself at the Mobility Department (Mobilitaetsreferat)
- You organise the signs yourself
- You install and remove the signs yourself
Advantage: Potentially cheaper
Disadvantage: Time investment, liability risk if installed incorrectly
Service provider:
- Handles the entire process
- From application through signs to installation
Advantage: No effort, no liability
Disadvantage: Higher costs
On liability: If you install the signs incorrectly or incompletely, you can be held liable in case of problems (e.g. traffic disruption). Service providers assume this responsibility.
