Resident Parking Permit: Parking Zones, Validity Area & Rules

Resident parking permit: What parking zones exist? What does the permit allow? Validity area, visitor cards, and rules explained.

Introduction

You have a resident parking permit (Bewohnerparkausweis) -- but where exactly can you park with it? Does it only apply to your street or to the entire neighbourhood? And what happens if you park in the wrong zone? Here you will find everything about parking zones, validity areas, and the rules for resident parking.

What Is a Resident Parking Zone?

A resident parking zone is a designated area where only residents with a valid parking permit may park without time limits. Everyone else must pay at the parking meter and observe the maximum parking duration.

How to Recognise It

  • Traffic sign 314.1 (start of parking management) with supplementary sign "Residents with parking permit [Zone] exempt"
  • Traffic sign 314.2 (end of the zone)
  • Supplementary signs with zone number or zone name

How Are the Zones Divided?

Typical Division

The zones are organised by districts or neighbourhoods. Each zone has an identifier (number or letter).

CityExample Zones
BerlinZone 1 (Mitte), Zone 2 (Prenzlauer Berg), etc.
HamburgZone A, B, C...
MunichParking management districts
CologneZone numbers by district
### Zone Boundaries

The zone boundaries are typically defined by streets, squares, or natural boundaries (river, railway line). Your parking permit is valid only within your zone.

How Do I Find My Zone?

Online

Most cities offer an online map of resident parking zones:

  • Search for "[Your city] resident parking zone map"
  • Or on your city's service portal
  • Postcode search is often available

On Site

Look for the zone signs at the entrances and exits of your neighbourhood. The zone number is shown on the supplementary sign below the parking management sign.

On Your Parking Permit

Your parking permit states the zone for which it is valid. Check whether the zone identifier matches the signs in your area.

When Do the Zones Apply?

Time Restrictions

Not all zones apply around the clock. Typical times:

RegulationMeaning
Mon--Fri 9am--8pmZone applies only on weekdays during the day
Mon--Sat 8am--10pmZone applies Mon--Sat, not on Sundays
ContinuousZone applies at all times (24/7)
Outside zone hours, you may park without a resident permit and without a parking ticket -- just like on any normal street.

Public Holidays

Public holidays are generally treated like Sundays. On public holidays that fall on a weekday, parking management often does not apply.

Moving to a Different Zone

If you move within the city:

1. Apply for a new parking permit for the new zone

2. Return the old parking permit (required in some cities)

3. Costs: New permit at full price; the old one is generally not refunded on a pro-rata basis

4. Timeframe: Possible immediately after re-registering your address

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I park in a different zone with my parking permit?

No. The permit is only valid in the designated zone. In other zones, you must buy a parking ticket.

What happens if I do not display the parking permit visibly?

A fine. The parking permit must be placed visibly behind the windscreen. If it is missing, a fine of 20--40 EUR may be imposed.

Are digital parking permits available?

Increasingly yes. Some cities offer digital parking permits that are stored in the licence plate recognition system. You no longer need to display anything. Check whether your city offers this.

Can I transfer the parking permit to a different licence plate?

Yes, by re-registration. When changing vehicles, you must have the permit re-registered at the citizens' office (Buergeramt). Costs: usually 5--10 EUR.

Summary

  • Parking zone: Designated area with resident parking priority
  • Permit is valid only in your zone -- not in others
  • Time validity: Check supplementary signs (often Mon--Fri or Mon--Sat)
  • Without a permit: Parking ticket + maximum parking duration
  • When moving: New permit required for the new zone
  • Display visually -- otherwise a fine applies
