Fire Brigade Access Road and No-Stopping Zone: StVO Rules, Signs & Fines

No-stopping zone at a fire brigade access road: rules under the StVO, signs, 3-metre minimum width, towing risk, and fines explained.

Introduction

Fire brigade access roads (Feuerwehrzufahrten) are life-saving infrastructure. Anyone who parks there risks not only a fine but also being towed immediately -- without warning. Here you will learn which rules apply, how to recognise fire brigade access roads, and what happens in case of violations.

Legal Basis

The fire brigade access road is regulated by several provisions:

  • StVO (Road Traffic Regulations) Section 12 Para. 1 No. 8: Stopping is prohibited in front of and within fire brigade access roads
  • VwV-StVO (Administrative Regulations): Specifies signage and minimum width requirements
  • State Building Codes (Landesbauordnungen, LBO): Regulate the structural obligation to provide a fire brigade access road

The no-stopping rule applies absolutely -- no stopping, no parking, no brief standing.

Signs and Markings

Official Traffic Sign

Fire brigade access roads are marked with the supplementary sign "Feuerwehrzufahrt" (fire brigade access road) below a no-stopping sign.

Commonly seen:

  • Sign 283 (absolute no-stopping zone) + supplement "Feuerwehrzufahrt"
  • Standalone sign "Feuerwehrzufahrt -- Bitte freihalten" (Fire brigade access -- Please keep clear)

Private Signage

Many property owners put up their own signs ("Feuerwehrzufahrt freihalten" -- Keep fire brigade access clear). These have no legal effect under the StVO, but:

  • The fire brigade access road still applies (prescribed under building law)
  • Towing is possible through the Public Order Office (Ordnungsamt)
  • The fine can be imposed under StVO rules

Minimum Width: 3 Metres

A fire brigade access road must have a minimum width of 3 metres. These 3 metres must be clear at all times.

VehicleMinimum Width
Fire engine2.55 m
Turntable ladder2.55 m
Safety clearance0.45 m
Total3.00 m
If a parked car reduces the available width to less than 3 metres, it can be towed immediately.

Towing: Immediate and Without Warning

Unlike regular no-stopping zones, there is no leniency for fire brigade access roads:

  • No waiting: The Public Order Office (Ordnungsamt) does not need to attempt to reach the vehicle owner
  • Immediate order: Towing can be arranged directly
  • Costs: 150--300 EUR towing costs + fine + storage fee

The reason: In the event of a fire, every minute counts. A blocked fire engine can cost lives.

Marked vs. Unmarked Fire Brigade Access Roads

Marked

  • Signs, ground markings, or both
  • Red-and-white hatching on the ground (common)
  • Clear legal situation: violation easily provable

Unmarked

  • Required under building law but not signposted
  • Occurs with older buildings
  • The no-stopping rule still applies (StVO Section 12)
  • Harder to prove, but the Public Order Office (Ordnungsamt) can enforce it

Frequently Asked Questions

May I stop "just briefly" in a fire brigade access road?

No. An absolute no-stopping rule applies. Even 30 seconds to get out of the car is not permitted.

Does the no-stopping rule apply at night too?

Yes. Fire brigade access roads must be kept clear 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. A fire can break out at any time.

Who pays the towing costs?

The vehicle owner. Not the driver, but the registered keeper shown in the vehicle registration document.

What if the fire brigade access road is not signposted?

The no-stopping rule still applies under building law. However, fines are harder to enforce. In practice, a warning is often given first.

Can I appeal against the towing?

Yes, but the chances of success are slim. Fire brigade access roads have the highest priority. Only if the signage is defective or the remaining width demonstrably exceeds 3 metres is there a chance.

Summary

  • Absolute no-stopping zone -- no stopping, no parking
  • 3-metre minimum width must remain clear
  • Immediate towing without warning is possible
  • Fine: 55--120 EUR + towing costs
  • Applies 24/7 -- no exception for nights or weekends
  • Unmarked fire brigade access roads are also protected
