Plug-in hybrid funding 2026: What still applies

Short answer

Plug-in hybrids may be eligible for funding 2026 under certain conditions. The key is that it is genuinely a plug-in hybrid with an external charging connection and that the technical requirements are met. Full hybrids without a charging connection are not included.

According to the current AmtsGuide data status, the deadline for plug-in hybrids up to 30 June 2027 must also be observed.

A plug-in hybrid is not the same as a hybrid

Many vehicles are advertised as hybrids. That is not enough for funding. There are three important groups:

  • Purely electric car: runs solely on electricity.
  • Plug-in hybrid: can be charged externally and travels a certain distance electrically.
  • Full hybrid: charges only via the combustion engine or when braking and has no external charging connection.

The technical classification is relevant for funding. Ask for the data in writing.

Which conditions count

For plug-in hybrids, this typically concerns CO2 emissions or electric range. The model's sales designation is not enough. The official vehicle data are decisive.

Check before signing the contract:

  • CO2 value
  • Electric range
  • Date of the purchase or lease agreement
  • Type of registration
  • Registered keeper in the contract

Why the deadline matters

Where funding is time-limited, it is not only the vehicle you want that matters. Delivery time, contract date and registration can be decisive. With long delivery times, clarify in writing which date counts for funding.

Allow more contingency for plug-in hybrids than for purely electric cars. In borderline cases especially, a delayed delivery is a real risk.

When a purely electric car is better

A purely electric car may be easier to assess because fewer technical thresholds are relevant. The level of funding may also be higher. If you can charge regularly at home or at work anyway, do not compare only by purchase price.

The wallbox question for plug-in hybrids

A plug-in hybrid is only truly worthwhile if it is charged regularly. Without regular charging, the vehicle often runs like a heavy combustion-engine car. Therefore, also check whether a wallbox or another reliable charging point is possible at home.

Find providers

Ask providers specifically for the technical evidence for funding. A general statement such as "eligible for funding" is not enough.
