Fine notice appeal
What matters before appealing a fine notice.
Updated: May 4, 2026 · Updated
When is an appeal possible?
An appeal challenges the fine notice. It may be relevant if the allegation is wrong, procedure was flawed or consequences such as points or a driving ban need review.
Before appealing, secure the notice, reference number, service date and evidence. The deadline runs from service.
| Point | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Recipient | The appeal goes to the authority named in the notice. |
| Form | Written or recorded with the authority, depending on the notice. |
| Reasons | Not always required immediately, but often useful. |
What to include
State the reference number, notice date, name and address. Make clear that you are appealing the fine notice.
If you give reasons, separate facts from legal assessment: wrong driver, wrong plate, measurement issue, missing hearing or unclear service are different points.
After the appeal
The authority reviews the case again. It can withdraw or amend the notice, or forward the matter for court review.
If points, a driving ban or high costs are at stake, legal review is sensible.
