Asbestos removal – Bremen

Gewerbeaufsicht des Landes Bremen (Arbeits- und Immissionsschutzbehörde).
Bremen is a city-state with two cities. The Gewerbeaufsicht therefore has two offices.

2. Specialist company approval (high risk)
Required for demolition and remediation work involving weakly bound asbestos (friable).
Application: download and submit the approval application as a PDF from gewerbeaufsicht.bremen.de/formulare-5618.
Documents:
- Evidence of technical equipment in accordance with TRGS 519, Anlage 8
- Evidence of a competent person (valid certificate of competence)
- Evidence of the employer's reliability
- Employees' occupational health precaution records
- Risk assessment
Fees: Approval is charged according to the work involved; no fixed flat rate is publicly stated.
3. A Notification requirement
All commercial activities involving asbestos must be notified.

4. Disposal
Small quantities (households / small businesses), City of Bremen: Recycling-Station Blockland is the only Bremen recycling station that accepts asbestos. All other recycling stations do not accept asbestos.

Small quantities, Bremerhaven: Entsorgungsbetriebe Bremerhaven (EBB) is responsible. Enquiries should be sent directly to EBB.
Larger quantities (specialist companies): approved specialist waste-disposal companies with a consignment note (AVV 17 06 01*). Blockland landfill in Bremen accepts mineral waste including asbestos. It is operated by Umweltbetrieb Bremen, Willy-Brandt-Platz 7, 28215 Bremen, telephone 0421 361-79000. Landfill class I accepts firmly bound asbestos. Landfill class III or a special landfill accepts weakly bound asbestos.
5. Special features
- City state with two service locations: Bremen and Bremerhaven each have a Gewerbeaufsicht service location.
- Asbestos disposal only at Blockland: this is the only asbestos acceptance point in the City of Bremen municipality. All other recycling stations do not accept asbestos.
- Own landfill: Bremen operates its own asbestos disposal facility at Blockland landfill. Berlin, by contrast, depends on landfills in Brandenburg.
