Asbestos remediation – Rhineland-Palatinate
1. Responsible authorities
Rhineland-Palatinate has two Struktur- und Genehmigungsdirektionen (SGD). The SGD responsible for approval is the one at the company's registered office. For notifications, the SGD at the construction site is responsible.

2. Specialist company approval (high risk)
Required for demolition and remediation work involving loosely bound asbestos (friable).
Apply to the responsible SGD Gewerbeaufsicht department at the company's registered office. Forms are available as PDFs on sgdnord.rlp.de or sgdsued.rlp.de.
Documents:
- Evidence of technical equipment in accordance with TRGS 519, Anlage 8
- Evidence of a competent person (valid proof of expertise)
- Evidence of the employer's reliability
- Employees' occupational medical examination records
- Risk assessment
Fees: Approval costs depend on the work involved; a fixed flat rate is not publicly stated.
3. A Notification requirement
All commercial activities involving asbestos are subject to notification.

The approval notice is subject to a fee.
4. Disposal
Small quantities (households / small businesses): the districts and district-free cities are responsible through their municipal waste management operators.
Larger quantities (specialist companies): approved specialist waste disposal companies with consignment note (AVV 17 06 01*). SAM Sonderabfall-Management-Gesellschaft Rheinland-Pfalz mbH coordinates hazardous waste disposal in the state. The consignment note fee is an additional 6,50 EUR per delivery. Disposal routes are available at sgdsued.rlp.de/themen/asbest/entsorgungswege. Landfill class I accepts firmly bound asbestos. Landfill class III or a special landfill accepts loosely bound asbestos.
5. Special features
- Two SGDs instead of Regierungspräsidien: Rhineland-Palatinate merged its three Regierungspräsidien into two SGDs in 2001.
- Dedicated asbestos page: SGD Süd brings together the information sheet, forms and disposal routes on a dedicated Topic page.
- SAM consignment note fee transparent: Rhineland-Palatinate publicly states the 6,50 EUR per consignment note.
- No fully digital online notification: submission is by email or post; there is no central online portal.
