Asbestos remediation – Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
1. Responsible authority
Landesamt für Gesundheit und Soziales Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (LAGuS), Abteilung Arbeitsschutz. The department has a policy unit with an occupational medical service and four regional units.

2. Specialist contractor approval (high risk)
Required for demolition and remediation work involving loosely bound asbestos (friable).
Apply to the responsible LAGuS department in writing or by email. Application form at lagus.mv-regierung.de.
Documents:
- Evidence of technical equipment in accordance with TRGS 519, Anlage 8
- Evidence of a competent person (valid certificate of competence)
- Evidence of the employer's reliability
- Evidence of employees' occupational health checks
- Risk assessment
Fees: Approval is charged according to the effort involved; no fixed flat rate is published.
3. A Notification requirement
All commercial activities involving asbestos must be notified.

Online: Notifications can be submitted via the MV-Serviceportal. The approval notice is subject to a fee.
4. Disposal
Small quantities (households / small businesses): the districts and district-free cities are responsible through their municipal waste management operators. Deliver to recycling centres or use municipal hazardous-waste collection services.
Example, Vorpommern-Rügen district: owners pack asbestos sheets in big bags and deliver them to Eigenbetrieb Abfallwirtschaft Vorpommern-Rügen at the Samtens and Stralsund operating yards. The operator also accepts small quantities unpackaged.
Larger quantities (specialist contractors): approved specialist waste-disposal companies with a consignment note (AVV 17 06 01*). Landfill class I accepts firmly bound asbestos. Landfill class III or a special landfill accepts loosely bound asbestos. The Staatliche Amt für Landwirtschaft und Umwelt (StALU) for the relevant region is responsible for landfill permits.
5. Special features
- LAGuS as a special authority: LAGuS brings together occupational safety, health protection and social affairs in one state office. Occupational safety is not outsourced here to an independent trade inspectorate.
- Four departments with regional responsibility: Rostock, Schwerin, Neubrandenburg and Stralsund. Specialist contractors must know which department is responsible for their registered office or construction site.
