Balcony solar systems in Braunschweig: funding and application

Overview

Balcony solar systems are small photovoltaic systems for plug sockets. They are also called plug-in solar devices or mini PV systems. The city of Braunschweig funds them through its Förderprogramm für regenerative Energien, but the budget for 2026 has already been exhausted.

The 2026 application period began on 15. A April 2026 through the city's service portal. Since July 2026, the budget has been exhausted and the city is not currently accepting new applications. Check the programme page regularly for a new round next year.

State and federal funding

Lower Saxony has no dedicated state programme for balcony solar systems. Since January 2023, the zero VAT rate has applied nationwide to private photovoltaic systems. Tenants' rights

Under § 554 BGB, tenants are entitled to install a plug-in solar device. Landlords may not impose a blanket ban on installation. They may set reasonable conditions, for example on the type of mounting.

Registration with the grid operator

The grid operator in Braunschweig is BS|ENERGY (Braunschweiger Versorgungs-AG). Since Solarpaket I, separate registration with the grid operator is no longer required. The grid operator receives the information automatically through the Marktstammdatenregister.
