Balcony solar systems in Trier: funding and application

Overview

Balcony solar systems are small photovoltaic systems for plug sockets. They are also known as plug-in solar devices or mini PV systems. The City of Trier no longer funds them.

Funding in Trier

From July 2024 to 31 March 2026, the City of Trier paid a flat-rate grant of 200 EUR per balcony solar system from KIPKI funds of the state of Rheinland-Pfalz. The programme has expired and new applications are no longer possible.

The Trier-Saarburg district also paid a grant of 150 EUR per system. The funds for this programme have now been exhausted. Current information is available on the district's website.

State and federal funding

Rheinland-Pfalz has no separate state programme for balcony solar systems. The zero VAT rate for private photovoltaic systems has applied nationwide since January 2023. The technical rules and registration requirement in the Marktstammdatenregister apply uniformly across Germany. Details are available in the background document Balcony solar systems in Germany.

Tenants' rights

Under § 554 BGB, tenants are entitled to install a plug-in solar device. Landlords may not impose a blanket ban on installation. They may set reasonable conditions, for example on the type of mounting.

Registration with the grid operator

The grid operator in Trier is Stadtwerke Trier (SWT). Since Solarpaket I, separate registration with the grid operator is no longer required. The grid operator receives the information automatically through the Marktstammdatenregister.
